Post 4 : Embarrassing Situation of Social Media

In the lecture, a essay about ‘The Social Networking Problem’ is shared.
In the essay, point out that:
-Many media was blocked by Great Firewall of china
-People are hired to scan of web content for sensitive word daily.

Social Media … in point of view of government
From of list of sites blocked by government, we could see till now, Facebook, Twitter, Blogspot those famous and common social media is still blocking by the Chinese government, to limit the information access by people.
This is an Taboo or hidden rule in Chinese society, that you cannot speak some sensitive words in Mainland. Not to offend any people, with certain limit of freedom speech for Netizens in Mainland.

However, government could not ignore the huge number of china’s Netizens, that is active users in China Locals Social Media, like Weibo.
In the contrary, many local government had launched the officials blogs, to listen (or let you feel like listen) of peoples need on local affairs and to adopt social media as official channels in government

This is one way for local government to make information more transparent to public, to enforce one the nation policy of ‘Promoting Social Harmony’ listed in of the Work Report of the Standing Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) National Committee 2012.

Of course we will never know are those blogs had already filtered ‘clean message’, however, this show that the government realize the power of social networking tools

This show that Social Media is still a double-edged sword to Chinese government.

Social Media … in point of view of individuals
Chinese social media goes to a strange direction in terms of individual's self-promotion.Making PR stunts to get itself become well-known.
Sister Furong芙蓉 demonstrate how to become famous , or infamous by using the advantage of social media.

Social Media … in point of view of company’s
By taking advantage of critical nature of China’s Netizens, that is ‘Many’ and ‘Active’, many solid case demonstrated that company could easily take advantage of social media, from recommendations, commercial market, etc.

Social Media is do a double-edged sword to Chinese government, but do simply control the content of social media, could withstand the strong will of freedom of China's Netizens, especially for next generation?

I believe, Human cannot stop the trend of reformation, so do the government officials.

  1. The Social network show its power with the period of Cheif Executive Election. I am glad to view the process and share some points through internest, even some "photo-edited" news from Henry Tong. Haha

  2. I understand the reasons why the Chinese government wants to control the content of social media. Social media is really a powerful tool to union people for any kind of actions. It can easily gather a large group of people to do anything, including illegal ones. And some people just follow without thinking the action is right or wrong. So the government just use the worst method to stop these from happening. But as you mentioned, shall the government still use this pessimistic way to control social media? I am doubt... they should think of a better way, perhaps from education.

  3. Social harmony is always concerned by the Chinese Government. I just wonder why social networking site actually is a place for people to share and communicate, but it is blocked because of the social harmony reason.

  4. I agree that most Governments, especially those dictatorial authorities, are afraid of social media so much because people can easily spread their thoughts and opinions with using it. See the examples of Tunisia and Egypt in the Jasmine Revolution last year. Now ,Chinese communist Party also afraid of this. I hope, in the near future, China would be democratized through the power of social media.

  5. I agree with what Andy said, the Education is the main task that Chinese government should do. Comparing in Hong Kong, people are well educated, no social website is blocked.

On the other hand, all social website should have strong policy to and prevent any bad messages posts to affect the country.

  7. You're right.Although the government try their best to control the social content and block many social website they cannot stop the trend. Many people in mainland China use "翻墙" tools to access to those blocked website. Also as weibo is getting more and more popular once someone release a news it will be widely spread. They can delete those content but they cannot control people's mind.

  8. Social media can union people's mind easily, but different minds of people forming their group, so social media platform can be easily become the battlefield. Thinking in a bad ways is that peoples are attacking each other like The Golden Forum. I think besides fighting our freedom of right, the justices and right user behavior are also important issues.

  9. Facebook, google and twitter are not available in mainland of China. Can they be friends with China in future? To the freedom of speech, I should say I agree with the strategies of these companies above, while as for the profits of the business, I should say they must obey the rules of China. 入乡随俗。 If they are really care about the development of their companies, they should not be so stick to themselves, they should become a little flexible. I like ebay's strategies about the eachnet. But it has to be admitted that eachnet's influence in China is much less than taobao. It is not because they didn't do well, while I think it is that they didn't understand Chinese background better that their rivals.

    1. I am conccurring with you, just like different country has different rules and laws and culture. The OSN comprised of all nations from the globe, there are too many cultures and sorta people on it. Perhaps there should be at least some baseline of guidelines to ensure the community is a good place to everybody on it.
