Post 1 - Social Experience Model

What is Social experience?
It is all stuffs describing how people perform socially, like going pub with friends, going to the church, every actions / interaction  involving other people in our daily live (i.e. the Social Environment)
So, what do it means when it comes to a Social Networking Tools or Platform? It surely will be the fundation of each Social Networking Tools or Platform. It's telling how the users in the platform  can interact, perform any social activities in the platform (i.e. the Social Environment).

Social Experience Model specifies:
  • how an social environment enables the delivery their value
  • How the social environment enables relationships or focus users to work on a task
  • Describe different roles for participants in the social environment
and can be classified as follows:
  • Individual
  • Social network
  • Closed work group
  • Visible work group
  • Community
  • Mass collaboration

In my opinion, it is all about the most fundamental part in the design of Social Networking Tools, some like the access right of each user, including what they can view, they can do, within the same platform

That's why, it was crucial for a Designer of Social Networking Platform to know this concept, before they start to design a Social Networking Platform.

Rawn from the IBM DeveloperWorks tried to summarize the Social Experience in a taste of technical guys, that's in a matrix form. I just take out the first row:

Personal

Individual

Social Network

Defined Group

Community

Mass Collaboration

Who can join

Only the owner

Anyone in domain, or identified members

Identified members selected by owner

Identified members

Identified members and/or Anyone in domain

Anyone in domain

You'll from the Mass collaboration to Individual, the first step, joining the site will have different access right.

It's also one of the key factor which determine what kind of users to have what kind of right in the platform.

That's is the fundamentals of all social networking applications.

The core 'identity', which composing the 'community'.

  1. I notice you mention about social experience model. I understand your point of view that categorising social experience which will affect the design of social network.

However, I would rather say that when social network sites just start, they may not have consider those categories. They develop the site with their own ideas. After the success of those sites, researchers then consider put those sites into different categories.

  2. This is really an interesting questions of 'whether egg come first or chicken come first'. But without a proper model / framework, it is hard for a social applications to evolves.
